How nice would it be to have a cold, fresh supply of your favorite beer available to you, in the comfort of your home, whenever you want to have it? If this sounds like you, then you might want to consider purchasing a kegerator.
What is a kegerator?
One of the easiest ways to define a kegerator is to pull apart the word. That’s right, its a keg and a refrigerator put together. Typically it is pretty small (think of a dorm room-sized fridge) though it doesn’t have to be. Some chest-sized refrigerators serve the purpose well. What’s mandatory is that the appliance has the ability to hold at least one keg inside of it and connect each keg to a working beer tap. Once it is set up, anytime you want your favorite fresh beer, all you have to do is use the tap.
Kegerators can take a lot of forms. Some are specially designed for their task but others are a smaller fridge that’s has been adapted to store kegs with the help of adaptor kits. It is pretty easy to find places to purchase kegerators, as they’re available online or at standard retail outlets such as Home Depot and Best Buy. Given the convenience and how easy they are to find, once you make the switch to a kegerator, you’ll probably wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
Beer tastes better from a kegerator
There’s another great reason to opt for a kegerator. The beer that’s in them tastes better and lasts longer. That’s partly because the beer is kept at a consistent temperature in a refrigerated environment, and partially because of the carbon dioxide that’s used to pressurize and dispense the liquid. Both things preserve the character and carbonation of the beer so it is at an optimal point when it reaches your glass.
While beer will taste better from a kegerator initially, there are a few things owners need to do if they want to maintain a level of quality over time. For starters, they should ensure that the appliance’s cooling mechanisms, including the thermometer, is working well. This prevents the beer from sharp temperature changes that compromise its flavor.

Another important part of kegerator maintenance is to pay attention to the quality of their beer lines. Like plastic tubing in any number of applications, tubing of a beer dispensing appliance can be difficult to completely dry. As a result, moisture from water or stale beer can grow unhealthy bacteria or impart off-flavors to the beverage. Kits that are sold online can help with the cleaning process, and it is worth asking your kegerator salesperson for their suggestions also.
Kegerator sales are picking up
Dedicated beer fans have been using kegerators in their homes for years, but the larger marketplace is just starting to adapt it in a more general way. They’re catching on to the advantages of taste and convenience that the appliance brings and finding that it makes the perfect addition to their basement bar, office, game room, or man-cave.
It is no surprise that kegerator sales are expected to increase. The appliance is easy to purchase and makes it convenient to have your favorite beer at home anytime.
How much are sales of the appliance increasing? According to Technavio, the beer dispensing appliance market as a whole is expected to grow by $30.76 million between 2016 and 2021. This includes kegerators, club top beer dispensers, back bar coolers, and remote cooler beer dispensers. Figures that solely represent kegerator sales weren’t included in the survey but one thing is clear. Home-based kegerators are a trend that’s here to stay.
