Guess what Caitlyn Jenner is into now?
Her surprising hobby places her within a community of passionate remote control enthusiasts
While nothing may prove to be a more surprising twist in Caitlyn Jenner’s life than her transition to becoming a woman, that doesn’t mean she still can’t pull off more minor unexpected moments from time to time. One of her recently discussed hobbies proves just the case.
As it turns out, Caitlyn Jenner is a remote control (RC) helicopter enthusiast. She’s shown engaging in her craft on her television show and it is obvious how much she appreciates the diversion.
About the RC helicopter community
The RC helicopter community is generally made up of an intelligent and curious group of individuals who are passionate about flying their vehicles. They’re extremely welcoming to newcomers and supportive of members who are looking to develop their flying skills.
Like any group, they have developed a series of online forums to help them connect and communicate. They run events and are linked by a set of real-world stores and retailers that support what they do. Within this community, Jenner is known as a pretty good pilot and is highly regarded for her skills.
The role that the hobby may play in her life
Transitioning involved dramatic shifts in just about every area of her life — her body, her relationships, her marital status, and where she lived. It must be nice that at least one small area can remain just as it was before.
It is easy to see that Caitlyn Jenner’s life is full of a fair share of challenges. While her history as a world-class athlete and Olympian suggests that she may embrace and, perhaps, even thrive on overcoming obstacles, it doesn’t mean that she wouldn’t welcome a break from time to time. Perhaps that kind of a break is exactly what her RC helicopter hobby offers.
It is worth noting that Caitlyn has been heavily involved with RC helicopters for years, long before her transition. While any suggestion about why she is so invested in the hobby is pure speculation, it’s easy to wonder if it gives her a bridge between her former life and her new one. Transitioning involved dramatic shifts in just about every area of her life — her body, her relationships, her marital status, and where she lived. It must be nice that at least one small area could remain just as it was before.
Other RC vehicles also make for great hobbies
Naturally, helicopters are just one of the RC vehicles that are available to enthusiasts. RC vehicles also include an assortment of different kinds of planes, boats, drones, robots, and model railroad trains.
Each of these hobbies comes with its own community including online message boards, formal clubs for enthusiasts, and retailers that provide parts, other supplies, and advice.
She’s not the only celebrity that flies
Caitlyn Jenner isn’t the only celebrity who is active in RC flying. She’s joined in her hobby by tech entrepreneur Steve Wozniak and the son of another tech entrepreneur Larry Ellison. The comedian Carrot Top and Jeopardy Host Alex Trebeck also have been known to fly the planes.
Musicians love the hobby too. ZZ Top’s drummer took it up when he became curious after watching his roadies fly planes during the downtime they had between shows. He’s joined in his hobby by another legendary rockstar, Roy Orbison.
To put things into perspective, it’s worth noting that the hobby isn’t just a modern phenomenon but boasts a pretty long history. Movie stars from the golden age of Hollywood like Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart were known to fly. In addition, a long list of well-known astronauts including Alan Shepherd, Gus Grissom, Neil Armstrong, and Jim Lovell passed their time on earth by guiding their own fair share of mini planes.
